Is it polite to ask your host what is for dinner?
No, not really because when asking a question like that your host may get the wrong idea and think that you are only there for the food and may get offended unless you need to know because of dietary requirements then it is accepatable or also if you are close and comfortable with each other then yes but other than that it is NOT a good idea.
