Do you say at the house or in the house?

Do you say at the house or in the house?
One is "at the house" when informally speaking about being in the house, or around it, and this is typically used when to familiars.

Formally, at the house often means just outside. In the house is really specific to physically being inside the house.

At the house is often more appropriate.
