What is the best Martial Art for seniors and people with back issues?
There are many factors to consider. In general, any martial artwill improve overall fitness, flexibility and strength. For thosestarting out at a later age, or with physical limitations, I woulddirect them toward the 'soft' arts as opposed to the hard ones. That being said, I started the study of Karate at age 42, earned myblack belt at 47 and currently run a small dojo. The Hanshi of thestyle is 74 and still teaches daily.
Tai Chi Chuan is a common one for older individuals. Most placesteach it for flexibility and movement, and don't talk much aboutthe self-defense or martial aspects of it. Find a place that doesand you will learn much!
While I would recommend avoiding arts that emphasize high kicks, such as Tae Kwon Do, there are styles of karate that don't expectany kicks above the waist. Judo, while it does mean getting thrownaround a lot, teaches one how to fall safely, a very importantskill!
Striking arts in general require more strength initially, butmellow out as one progresses. We have many practitioners in their60's and 70's in Shorin Ryu Karate.
I agree with Sensei Swarthout. I began my study at age 37 andearned my Black Belt in 2012. I have Multiple Sclerosis andteach Self Defense classes. May I suggest Seniors learn to usewalking cane for Self Defense? Canemasters and the American CaneSelf Defense System provide great canes and instructional materialsonline. I would be glad to answer any questions.Sensei Jim Boltonsenseijimbolton_selfdefense AT yahoo Dot comwww DOTangelfire DOT com / alt/ msjim/ Fireball/ Fireball DOT html
